Chapter 13

KRIVAN

“Hush. It is just me, little one.” He needed her to be quiet, needed her to stop fighting him as he pulled her to the farthest side of the spring so they could hide.

“Krivan?” He could feel her confusion in the way she spoke his name against his flesh.

“Yes. It is me, but you must be silent,” he hushed, tightening his hand against her small mouth and curling his body around her small frame to satisfy the urge coursing through his veins. It demanded he protect her. “I do not know how, but we were followed. I thought I had…”

He thought he had killed everyone he needed to ensure his clan’s safety, but clearly he was mistaken. Krivan gritted his teeth, trying to recall what had gone wrong. Their hideout was small, and he’d left no one alive when he’d escaped. So how did more Defilers manage to track them down to this cave?

Was it rotten luck and coincidence, or something else?

Truth be told, he expected something like this to happen. The Defiler clan didn’t get their name from kindness and being idle. Problem was, he just didn’t account for it happening so vekking soon.

Voices carried through the tunnels. They were getting louder, rowdier.

Edith’s body stilled. Krivan tried not to inhale her sweet scent. It wafted into his nares like fresh berries and recently bloomed desert flowers. The wasteland had so few of them; they were just as every bit as exotic and rare as she was. He also tried to ignore the way her soft curves fit so perfectly against his scales, but it came to a point where he couldn’t brush aside the way it felt like her body was melting right into his.

His vent was pressed right against her backside, and it made him ache like the blistering fires of the Pit.

Ever since Krivan had sunk his fangs into her neck, sucked the toxin from her body, and delivered his own serum, all his thoughts circled around her.

The way she looked. The way she smelled. The way she moved with two legs instead of a long, dexterous tail. She was different in every possible way, yet her uniqueness only drew his attention more.

It left him wondering if this was all because he was going into heat, or simply because of that bite, which prompted further spiraling thoughts: were the two somehow related?

How foolish of him to believe that he had believed that she was from Vesora. A creature like her couldn’t survive his planet. Not without help anyway.

“If anything happens, hide. Do not try anything. You will only end up dead,” he whispered into her ear.

“How unexpected.” One of the males sighed.

Krivan carefully peered over the side of a large stone keeping them hidden from view. He wanted to see how many there were and what weapons they had, if any.

“We didn’t come here for a spring, Ekta. We need to find that filthy crawler before Elnor has our heads. He must be somewhere around here,” the second one said, his sharp eyes blazing a trail through the chamber.
